Newsletter december 2014

After a good month vacation in August a new school year has started in September in Cambodia. In elementary school and high school, most children have moved to the next class. The number of students in college is again increased by 3, so that there are now 21 students, a great result. One of the students, after 4 years of study is hoping to graduate in July 2015. 8 students are in their 3rd year, 6 in their 2nd year en 3 have just started their 1st year. Their studies include dentistry, pharmacy and English literature. Three students are following a cooking school. One of the students terminated her study in August last. She left Samrong, married and is now running a business with her husband. New school uniforms have been purchased for all children. In total 5 new children joined the project and 5 have left.

Sponsors and Donors

We are very pleased to advise that our sponsor agreements with Zoeteman and De Penning (the successor of Bles-de Penning) have been extended.

Since April Mr. Prum Va has been employed as new assistant to Dr Vyrak. Our chief gardener Mr Rattana has been following a course at Fintrac, an American organization active in Cambodia which educates local farmers and trains them how to improve their yield. Our main sponsor Rijk Zwaan has been instrumental in arranging this two week course in Battambang.

Sivin, our local ‘mother’ and care taker of all children and volunteers will retire in February 2015 since her health has deteriorated over time.

Garden en greenhouse

Thanks to our sponsors we have been able to purchase a cultivator which eases working the sometimes rock hard soil. The results of garden and greenhouse have enormously improved and look promising. With some crops it goes with ups and downs but the cauliflower looks great!

Site visit by the board

In February 2015 a delegation of the WWCF Board will visit the farm again. We will discuss all running business, the budget and the plans for the next years. We will also discuss the progress of the children at school and university.

One of the plans on our wish list is the deepening of the fishpond and the reinforcement of the embankment. On the Westside (left on the picture) the wall might ultimately fall into the pond if no action is taken. The fishpond is essential for the irrigation of the garden and greenhouse. We need $5.000 for this (big) job! Sponsors welcome!

Rice Harvest

Within short the rice will be harvested again. We have been given free use of the rice field and the harvest is sufficient for many months of consumption ‘rice from own garden’. Doesn’t it look beautiful?

Cambodian Government relations

In Cambodia there are many (foreign) organizations active in various fields of development aid, often together with local partners. Not every organization is as transparent as ours. This is of concern to the Cambodian government and WWCF has reconfirmed her steady support and commitment in writing!

Best wishes for 2015

The WWCF board thanks all donors, sponsors and volunteers for their contribution to Samrong! This project has been so successful and deserves your continued support. In 2015 we will continue to keep you informed about the progress and development of Samrong Children’s farm.

Lastly, we wish you all a beautiful and prosperous 2015!

On behalf of WWCF, we thank all of our sponsors and donors for your support!
